After Thought #57

The unknown is not unavailable.  The unknown is unnoticed, and in going unnoticed, it only appears to be unavailable. 

If [we] took the time to notice the unnoticed, we would be quite surprised; we would in fact be shocked. 

We might realize what appeared to be unavailable was always, already, available, just outside the periphery of [our] [own] attention.

It seems ironic that we spend so much of our time searching and seeking for wholeness, when in fact, and all along, it was right there.

[You] and it are one; wholeness, expressing itself as everything-ness.

In our distraction, in the delusion of apparent conditioning, we imagine we have to go somewhere or do something in order to find what we assumed was unavailable.

And yet, all along, [it] was right there, unconditionally; immediately available, always accessible, open and empty, quiet and still.

Once noticed, it can be seen that there is no place where you can go that [It] is not always available, regardless of what you may think or feel, understand or believe. 

It’s not here or there – it’s everywhere.

It is.

Intoxicated by ideas of this and that, and the seduction and story of becoming, the seeker loses herself in mudra, mantra, yantra and tantra.

Look and see for [yourself]; look directly into [your] [own] experience.

Look innocently into the face of [your] [own] Being.

Outside the nonsense and outrageous ideas of becoming; in what could be or not be, whether awake or sleep.

What can be seen is what causelessly, timelessly, always is: awareness, open and empty, quiet and still; a prelude to the threshold of wholeness and the simplicity of Being…

Radically Awake & Wildly Aware…

There is no thinker, there is no observer, and there is no witness.  There is no subject/object, perceiver/perceived or observer/observed; it’s all part of a dream.

We only imagine there is a thinker, observer, and witness.  We only think there is a subject/object, perceiver/perceived, and observer/observed.  For sure, thoughts are there in awareness, coming and going; for sure, observing is there in awareness, coming and going.  For sure, witnessing also appears to be there in awareness, coming and going. 

Hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, and tasting, also appear to be there in awareness, coming and going, and yet, there’s no formal person as such; someone who is thinking, observing, witnessing, hearing, seeing, smelling, touching or tasting.  There is no subject or perceiver and there only appears to be objects perceived through a veil of superstitious separation and conditioning.

When the “I” thought arises in awareness a seed is planted, a thinker is born and a “me” follows very shortly there-after.  When an “I” thought, a “me” thought, a “you” thought, or “another” thought arises, a whole universe is born with its own unique, prevailing story.  Cut the story of “I”, “me”, “mine” and “other”, fall into awareness only, and the “I” you imagine yourself to be is left naked, vulnerable and exposed; the “you” imagine yourself to be begins to evaporate. 

Cut the story of the [you] – the you imagine yourself to be, and [you] are at once [free] from a story that never was.  Cut the story and you begin to cut the “I” at its root, the same root that feeds all suffering.  Cut the story and your ideas of suffering begin to dissolve, leaving behind the quietude of awareness only; awareness that was already, always, present.

What’s the story?

The story is what you think.  The story is what you think and imagine about what you’re thinking and imagining.  The story is a description, an assessment, an evaluation, judgment, understanding, insight and perception, which arises from thinking and imagining.  Conventionally, we call “it” the mind, once’s it’s labeled, we identify with it, as self; we imagine the mind is who we are. 

The story is what’s happening or not happening in your story, another’s story, and the story of the world you imagine yourself to be in.  The story is the who, the what, the where, the when and the why of “me”, and all the details and obsessions that “me” may have.  The story arises from the seed thought “I”, and becomes a “me” that thinks about the thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, that every “me” appears to have.

If you are in a story can there be awareness?

If you are awareness, can there be a story?

You are always, already present, but are you aware of the fact you are running a story? 

Are you aware of the fact there is identification to a story? 

Are you aware of the fact you are aware?

 

As long as you are in a story; as long as you give unnecessary attention to the story that arises as thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, you can only ever imagine you are aware of what’s happening.  Instead of trying to understand or figure out the infinite complexity and layers to your so-called story, notice the fact there is awareness.  Notice the fact that as awareness, you can be aware of the fact you are aware instead.

As awareness, there is no thinker.  As awareness, there is no observer.  As awareness, there is no witness.  As awareness, there are thoughts but there is no thinker.  As awareness, there is observing but there is no observer.  As awareness, there appears to be witnessing but there is never any witness, thinker or observer per say.  As awareness, thoughts may appear to be there, observing may appear to be there, and even witnessing may appear to be there, but there is no “awarer”; there is only awareness, always, and already; awareness that is open, causeless, empty, and unconditional.

There will always appear to be a story as long as there appears to be a body/mind appearing in that story.  There will always appear to be a story with some description, editorial, or commentary, about something that is happening or not happening in life, but there is no person per say, and there does not have to be suffering.

Suffering occurs when there is identification to a story, when we affirm and sanction the fiction of “me” within a story.  As soon as the “I” arises, when the “I” thought begins to filter a sense of self, the potential for suffering will occur.  All suffering occurs in the story – the story of “me”.  As long as we continue to compare and asses, evaluate, judge and analyze the story, and how it should be or not be; as long as we identify with and to the “I” thought, the “me” thought, and the “my” thought, of our so-called experience; the aliveness, fullness and freedom that thrives in the so-called present moment, will appear to be lost.

It’s really quite simple, stop endorsing the false self; the “me” you imagine yourself to be.  “Me” lives in the story: the story you have about yourself, others and the world you appear to live in.  It’s the story of “me” and “my” suffering, “me” and “my” joy, “me” and “my” dreams, “me” and “my” confusion or clarity. 

It’s the story of “me” and “my” search for a lover, more money, the perfect job, and a body that will never, ever, be.  It’s the search for happiness, perfection, spirituality, and so-called enlightenment.  “Me” thrives when it identifies to thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, memories, associations, intentions and desires, which appears to be part of every story; regardless of whether it is a good story or a bad story; a story is a story.

When we grasp onto, chase after, or run from thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, we temporarily appear to lose ourselves to those thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires.  As we cling to those thoughts, as we obsess over those thoughts, the neurosis of “I” is established and we suffer.

When we identify ourselves as a thought, feeling, emotion, perception, association, memory, intention and desire, by assuming ownership and authorship of those thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires; when we try to organize, explain and understand those thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, we spin in chaos of our own confusion.

We appear to be shackled by our own assumption and conditioning; we wrongly assume they are “my thoughts”, “my feelings”, “my emotions”, “my perceptions”, “my associations”, “my memories”, “my intentions” and “my desires”.  We never take the time to question their validity, to ascertain for [ourselves] the nature of our existence, or what we call “my” experience. 

For the most part, we abstain from confirming the fact that our existence appears to be based on the transient nature and assumption that we are our thinking, feeling, hearing, seeing, touching, tasting and smelling; the fiction of “me” is based on an assumption only, not our essential nature.

Here, in the space of awareness, it can be seen that once a thought arises and is caught, the birth of “me” and “my” story unfolds.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that thought comes first, and then a thinker is born or not.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that thought comes first, and an observer is born or not.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that thought comes first, and a witness is born or not. 

Here as awareness, it can be seen that if there is an attempt to run from the thought, chase after a thought, hold onto the thought or make an attempt to try to fix, change, heal, transform or celebrate, a thought, the “me” you imagine yourself to be will instantly appear to be caught up in a web of its own deception. 

Here as awareness, it can be seen that in every moment, there can be an option to follow the scent of a thought or not.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that in spite of the spell of thinking or the trance of temptation, you can always rest as awareness only.

To be clear, I’m not saying the story is right or wrong; i’m not implying thoughts are “good” or “bad”.  To be clear, I’m also not saying feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires are important or not important; they are as they are, and will be or not be.  They will come and go, playing a part in the apparent story, part of something that appears to be happening or not happening. 

You can have/notice a thought; you just don’t need to assume that it’s your thought. You can have/notice a feeling, emotion, perception, association, memory, intention or desire; you just don’t need to assume that it’s your feeling, emotion, perception, association, memory, intention or desire. 

As long as you continue to imagine you are the thinker of thoughts and the doer of actions, you will be caught in the hypnosis of self engendered thinking and the spell of your own assumption and conditioning.  You will be caught up in the trance of “me”, and you will temporarily lose touch with the birthplace of freedom and happiness.  You will be held hostage to the very personal story of “I”, “me”, “mine”, and the unbound will appear to be bound.

I’m asking [you] to consider for a moment that it is possible to be in [your] story – as awareness, and yet, not be of it.  Here as awareness, there is an open, empty, unconditional, space of stillness.  Here in awareness, there is a causeless freedom.  Here as awareness, causeless joy can be seen and felt.  Here in choice-less awareness, outside the idea of freedom and joy, there is silence, and in this space of this stillness, this awareness, there is a freedom to simple Be.

Here as awareness, there is no arriving or becoming.  Here as awareness, there is no need to pretend or persuade yourself or others that it is possible or necessary to think your way into happiness, health, wholeness, or enlightenment.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that [you] are already, always here, radically awake and wildly aware in the midst of this now.  Here as awareness, you can see directly into the face of Being and the miracle of what is, in this now. 

This confounds the priest, the profit, and the seeker who want to organize and control, regulate and manage, accumulate, certify, and master something that cannot be controlled, certified, or mastered.  Here as awareness, even the temporary thrill of psychological insight, however seductive and appealing, is seen as a distraction to the miracle and blessing of Being; of knowing Who You Are beyond the character of an “I” that appears to live and breathe in the story of “me”.

Here as awareness, it can be seen that philosophies and dogmas purporting to raise consciousness, are in themselves, delusions of their own construction and doomed to fail.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that awareness appears to be simultaneously the birthplace of separation, and the playground of divinity.  ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Here as awareness, it can be seen that awareness itself is radically inclusive, all-encompassing, and immediately available.  Here as awareness, it can be seen that beyond the ideas of up and down, and in and out, the burden of a personality and its neurotic tendencies can only, ever, temporarily distract oneself from who and what they always, already are.

Just for now, in this present moment, can [you] find anyone who is there, who is doing the thinking, or is there just the appearance of thinking?

In the direct experience of this now, take a look for [yourself]; can [you] find someone who is “doing” the listening, “doing” the seeing, “doing” the feeling, touching and tasting, or is there just the appearance of listening, seeing, feeling, touching and tasting?

If you do not depend upon, identify, use, assume or refer to something, is there a subject/object, seer/seen, observer/observed? Is there a person there who is “doing” the thinking, “doing” the observing, “doing” the witnessing, or is there just the appearance of thoughts, observing, and witnessing, apparently arising?

Just for now, take a moment to verify for [yourself] if you can find “a person”, or can it be seen that there is apparently only listening, feeling, touching and tasting, happening or not happening?

In this present moment experience we label now, I’m asking [you] to consider that all [we] can ever find are thoughts apparently appearing, feelings apparently appearing, emotions apparently appearing, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, apparently appearing or not appearing.

If you do not depend upon, identify, use, assume, refer or defer, to any relationship, including those “I” thoughts, “me” thoughts, “mine” thoughts, is there a person there who can claim authorship and ownership of those thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions and desires, or do they simply arise and subside?

What’s happening is never happening to a person per say – it’s only happening, and then the idea of ownership and authorship arises.  A [you] apparently becomes aw­­are of something and appears to lose touch with everything.  While [you] may be temporarily unaware or not interested in the emptiness, the space, the stillness, or the nothingness, of this so-called mystery, it’s always, already there, whether [you] are aware of it or not; whether [you] care about it or not.

The subject is the object and the object is the subject.  The witness is the witnessed and the witnessed is the witness.  The observer is the observed and the observed is the observer.  If the subject is the object and the object is the subject, there is no subject/object.  If the witness is the witnessed and the witnessed is the witness, there is no witness/witnessed.  If the observer is the observed and the observed is the observer, there is no observer/observed.  If there is no thought, if no “I” arises, there is no world.     

At the end of the day, whether [you] consider [yourself] a person or not, something is always, already, ever-present, and there is no-one there and no-where [you] can go where it is not always, already, ever-present.

Just for now, come back to [your] present, direct, experience, and what’s happening.  Just for now, be present with whatever is happening and ask [yourself]: who is it that is hearing? 

Who is it that is seeing? 

Who is it that is feeling, touching and tasting? 

Just for now, ask yourself who is that is thinking, observing and witnessing?

Notice what happens when [you] ask yourself: can the perceiver itself ever be perceived?

Over and over, again and again, notice the open, empty, unconditional space, of choice-less awareness, and the ever-present stillness that you are; notice [you] are already, always, radically awake and wildly aware…

Just For Now…

Just for now,

 

STOP.

 

Stop,

and

do

nothing.

 

Take a moment to pause in this now,  however this now may be. 

Take a moment to notice without reflection your inner nature, just as it is, now. 

Just for a moment let go of the temptation to think something or be something other than what is.

For a moment, let go of the need to have something, or do something. 

 

Just STOP,

and rest as awareness.

And if you can’t stop, just be aware of the fact you are aware,

just Be.

 

Be aware, right here, right now.

Take a moment to rest AS awareness only.

Just for this moment, as you rest as awareness, let go of any ideas you have about yourself, others, or the world you appear to live in.

And, if you can’t let go of those ideas about yourself, others, or the world you appear to live in, just stay with your experience as it is. 

Just be aware of your experience as it is. 

Just Be with what already is.

 

For a moment, let go of any attempt to fix or change, transform or heal anything; yourself, others, or the world you appear to live in. 

Take a moment to rest as awareness, and in that resting, notice there is space. 

Notice there is an inherent stillness that is part of Being aware. 

A space, a stillness, an awareness within rest. 

A space, a stillness, an awareness which never leaves.

In this moment of abstention, and the rest that is part of abstention, notice there is comfort and freedom. 

Notice this no-state-state of awareness.

Notice there is a simplicity and safety in simply Being.

 

Just for now abandon any want, need, or desire you may have for this moment to be anything other than what it is.

Drop the need;

temporarily drop all needs, including the need to understand anything.

As you rest as awareness, enjoy a moment of knowing that life inherently does not need to make sense or be understood, as awareness.

As you sink into this moment of being aware of awareness, rest in the joy of knowing there is no need of knowledge, in order for you to Be. 

Rest in the joy of knowing there is no need of practice, in order for you to Be.

Rest in the joy of knowing awareness itself is always, already, effortlessly, easily, here.

 

As you become familiar with awareness; as you settle gently and easily  into the experience and conviction of awareness, rest in the joy and freedom of knowing you are awareness, not the content of awareness. 

Rest in the joy and freedom of knowing you are not essentially an experience, or any thoughts, feelings, emotions, perceptions, associations, memories, intentions or desires that may arise and subside as an experience within awareness. 

Know that you are always, already, awareness, expressing itself as the One and only Self; alive and present as the One and only Being, within this now. 

Regardless of thought, regardless of feeling, regardless of emotion, regardless of perception, regardless of association, memory, intention or desire; you’re already, always, awareness, regardless of the content that may or may not be present within awareness.

Notice as you sink into this now, the threshold of awareness is already complete, already whole, already perfect in this now.

 As you rest in undivided attention; verify for yourself this awareness is naturally calm, overtly silent, and inherently still. 

In this moment of rest, notice awareness is changeless, timeless, causeless. 

 

Notice outside the thought and story of what you think you may want, need or desire for rest, restful awareness can already, always be found, as awareness.

Notice what is.

Notice what already, always is, in the background of your immediate experience, regardless of content.

In this moment of restful, changeless, awareness, outside the thought and story of what you think you may need for wholeness, healing, health and success; notice – as awareness, you already, always, touch an immediate well-being, naturally and spontaneously, regardless of what may or may not be occurring.

And if you feel distracted in this moment of awareness by this or that, if you appear to feel disturbed or divided by this or that, gently, effortlessly, easily, notice awareness, over and over, again and again.

Notice awareness is also, always, ever-present, even within distraction, disturbance, or apparent division. 

Notice awareness is full and complete within every experience.

 

Just for now, without adding or subtracting, without editing or sanitizing, rest in the simple joy of this present moment now, all by itself. 

Without the need to label or define, without the need to judge or evaluate, without the need to compare or access.

And, if you find that there is a need to edit or sanitize, label and define, judge and evaluate, compare and asses this or that; notice there can still be an awareness of awareness within this or that, in spite of what may appear to distract and divide, disturb or distort.

 

Notice the simplicity of awareness as Being; Being that is spontaneously, naturally, innocently here, all by itself.

Just for now, Be alert, Be awake, and Be present, over and over, again and again, without editorializing this innocence, without giving any consideration at all to its presence.

Just for now, Be alive, Be innocent and Be aware of this portal of Being, over and over, again and again.

Just for now, notice what you longed for was already, always, constantly here all by itself, alive, and present, in this moment we call now.

Never lost, always accessible, perched on the periphery of attention; awareness, the canvas upon which everything appears to arise and subside.

 

Just for a moment Be still as awareness; enjoy the liberty of not knowing; take comfort in knowing that not knowing in no-way adds too or detracts from Being.

Take comfort in knowing that understanding or not understanding, in no way adds too or detracts from Being.

Take comfort in knowing that merit and gain are just part of a game, and in no way adds too or detracts from Being.

 

What remains when there is no identification?

What remains in spite of the appearance of distraction, distortion, or disturbance?

What remains if awareness cannot ever, be divided by this or that?

 

Just for a moment, rest in a choice-less space; rest in awareness, where the need to understand is surrendered; where the need to gain knowledge is released; where the impulse to take action is abandoned; where the hunger for experience is suspended, all in favor of a non-experience experience; the no state state of simply Being aware.

 

Does it take an identity or role to Be?

Does it take a thought, idea, or belief to Be?

Does it take understanding or knowledge to Be?

Does it take action or achievement, gain or loss to Be?

Does it take practice or mastery to Be?

Does it take intention, attention, affirmation, transformation, healing or mastery, to Be?

 

In the midst of this now where thoughts and emotions, memories and feelings, sensations and beliefs, confusion or clarity, might come and go; take a moment to Be. 

In the midst of awareness were there may be sadness or joy, fear or courage, confusion or clarity; gently appreciate the alive, alert, simplicity of Being aware of restful awareness.

 

As awareness, thought has nothing to offer you.

As awareness, belief has nothing to offer you.

As awareness, philosophy has nothing to offer you.

As awareness, memory has nothing to offer you,

As awareness, feelings, emotions, perceptions and associations, have nothing to offer you.

 

Here by itself without thought.

Here by itself without definition.

Here by itself  without belief.

Here by itself  without knowledge.

Here by itself  without understanding.

Here by itself  without affirmation.

Here by itself  without sanction.

Without practice, without desire, without intention; here by itself without mastery.

 

In the midst of this now, what was once imagined as unreal, is now found to be real. 

What was once imagined as real, is now found to be unreal.

In the midst of this now where you are informed and awake, where you are wildly aware, relax in the joy of knowing you can always rest, over and over, again and again, as you always, already, inescapably are.

Self evident awareness; aware of itself, over and over, again and again, gently, easily and effortlessly, without condition…
